MVB Improves to 4-0 After Win Over Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Ball State men’s volleyball team earned a 3-1 win (25-19, 26-28, 25-22, 25-20) over the Mount Olive Trojans Friday evening at Kornegay Arena. Three Cardinals registered double digits in kills to help earn the fourth win of the season.

The Trojans dropped their first set and match of the season, while the Cardinals improved to 4-0.

Senior outside hitter Greg Herceg led the Cardinals with a season-high 21 kills, one kill shy of tying his career high. The senior right side hitter had a .412 hitting percentage (21-7-34) to go with six assisted blocks, three service aces and three digs. Outside hitter Shane Witmer added a season-high 12 kills off a .391 average (.391). The sophomore was one dig shy of a double-double, getting under a team-high nine digs. Junior middle attacker Matt Leske was the third Cardinal to register double digits in kills, with a season-high 10 kills, to go with a .467 hitting percentage (.467) and five assisted blocks.

Junior middle attacker Kevin Owens added eight kills to go with a career-high nine assisted blocks. Freshman outside hitter Jack Lesure tied his career-high with five kills. Junior setter Graham McIlvaine had 43 assists and three assisted blocks.

The Cardinals held the lead throughout the first set and hit at .577 (17-2-26), while the Trojans hit a .167 clip (9-5-24). The second set saw the Cardinals drop to a .300 percentage (14-5-30), while the Trojans improved to .375 (18-6-32). The third set both teams dropped, with the Cardinals hitting at .226 (16-9-31) and the Trojans at .130 (9-6-23).  Ball State tightened up in the fourth set for a .526 clip (14-4-19) while the Trojans managed a .217 percentage (11-6-23).

The Cardinals held the advantage in blocks (14.5-10), digs (25-22), kills (61-47), assists (56-46) and service aces (7-6). There were 30 ties and eight lead changes throughout the match.

Mount Olive was led by Angel Dache who tallied 20 kills, two aces, two solo blocks and two assisted blocks.
