MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's volleyball team announced its 2013 schedule of 25 matches Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals, who will be celebrating its 50th season, will play 13 regular season matches at Worthen Arena in addition to an Alumni Match.
"The 25 dates of competition that we have will expose our team to a variety of playing styles and high-level competition," said head coach Joel Walton. "We have retained a lot of the strength from last year's roster and it is nice to have that stability of a core nucleus of experienced returning. That will service as a significant advantage for our team."
The Cardinals will begin 2013 with an alumni match, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 5 at 6 p.m. at Worthen Arena. Ball State will open the season by hosting EIVA opponent St. Francis on Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. The Cardinals will then spend the rest of the month of January on the road, visiting New Jersey Institute (Jan. 18), Sacred Heart (Jan. 19), Mount Olive (Jan. 25) and Barton (Jan. 26).
Ball State will then begin a five-match home stand by hosting Quincy (Feb. 1), Lindenwood (Feb. 2), Grand Canyon College (Feb. 8 and 9) and IPFW (Feb. 13). BSU will then head to Ohio State for a match on Feb. 17 before heading to the Chicago area to take on Lewis (Feb. 22) and Loyola (Feb. 23).
BSU will host the Don Shondell Active Ankle Challenge the weekend of Mar. 9-10 when it hosts Sacred Heart and Penn State. The Cardinals will then head on a road trip to face Belmont Abbey (Mar. 15) and King College (Mar. 16) out of the EIVA.
Ball State will stay close to home, heading up I-69 to take on IPFW on Mar. 21 before hosting Ohio State (Mar. 22), Limestone (Mar. 29) and Pfeiffer (Mar. 30) at Worthen Arena. The final road trip of the year will pit the Cardinals against Quincy (Apr. 5) and Lindenwood (Apr. 6). The 2013 campaign will end at home when Ball State welcomes Lewis (Apr. 11) and Loyola (April 13) to Muncie.
The 2013 MIVA Tournament will begin April 20 with the quarterfinals being held at the site of the highest seed. The semifinals (April 24) and the championship match (April 27) will also follow the same format and will be held at the site of the highest seeds.
"The league is very competitive this season," said Walton. "Defending champion Lewis returns its entire roster that includes two MIVA All-Conference selections. Also, Ohio State, Loyola and Grand Canyon have most of its rosters intact from last season."
