Ball State’s football team conducted its annual Spring Scrimmage to wrap up the spring session in preparations for the 2014 season.

With a modified scoring system, the defense defeated the offense by a 44-22 margin for head coach Pete Lembo, who will be in his fourth season at the helm in 2014.

“We had a great crowd here and we got through the day pretty healthy,” Lembo said.  “I think our defense continues to move forward and grow up.  Offensively, we are a work in progress.  We had some special teams guys step up today and that was good to see.  We are looking forward to the summer and fall camp as we prepare for Colgate.”

Jack Milas, a redshirt freshman quarterback, completed 10-of-26 passes for 144 yards, including a long pass of 71 yards.  Ozzie Mann, a sophomore, completed 7-of-12 passes for 43 yards with a long pass of 11 yards.  True freshman David Morrison, who started school at Ball State in January, completed 3-of-6 passes for 38 yards with a long completion of 26 yards.  Kyle Kamman, a junior for the Cardinals, completed 2-of-8 passes for nine yards.

"The quarterback battle is still very much a battle," Lembo said.  "We are not overly concerned with rushing to make a decision.  Hopefully, they will all continue to get better.  We were a little inconsistent in the passing game and that is not all on them.  We have a lot of room to get better in a lot of areas."

Shane Belle, a fifth-year senior wide receiver, caught a 71-yard pass from Milas for the longest play of the day.  Belle ended the scrimmage with two catches for 75 yards.  KeVonn Mabon had six catches for 42 yards, while Cwynnettie Brown managed three receptions for 43 yards.

Jahwan Edwards was the top rusher in the scrimmage with 13 carries for 26 yards, while Teddy Williamson rushed 10 times for 20 yards.

"We are deep at tailback, and they will have a good supporting cast," Lembo said.  "We are going to be solid up front on the offensive line.  We have three very good tight ends."

Defensively, Aaron Taylor and Anthony Winbush led the White with six tackles apiece.  Dae’Shaun Hurley intercepted the first pass of the game and returned it 37 yards to the five-yard line, plus added two tackles.  Trey Gardner and Tracy Key each registered one sack in the modified scrimmage.  Brian Jones, Daniel Garces, Ben Ingle and Keenan Noel added five tackles apiece.

"We had some younger guys generate some pass rush," Lembo said.  "Anthony Winbush has been a pleasant surprise and got to play a little more today because of some injuries."

Ball State will open the 2014 season Aug. 30, with a home game at Scheumann Stadium vs. Colgate.
