Darius Hill (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs), a senior tight end on the Ball State University football team, has been named to the John Mackey Award Watch List, which is selected by the Nassau County Sports Commission.

Hill, who was a semifinalist for the award last year, is one of 30 tight ends from across the country to be selected to the 2008 preason watch list. Earlier this summer, he was also named to the 2008 Rotary Lombardi Watch List, which is awarded to the best down lineman, end-to-end, in the country.

The Mackey Award, which is given annually to the best collegiate tight end in the nation, is named in honor of the NFL Hall of Fame member who is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position.

Hill, who was named to the All-Mid-American Conference First Team last season, started in 12 games for Ball State. The 6-foot-6 general studies major, has 24 career touchdown receptions, which ties for first on Ball State’s career list with Brian Oliver (1991-94). He has 1,803 career receiving yards to rank sixth on Ball State’s all-time list, and ranks ninth on the Cardinals’ career chart with 118 pass receptions. A year ago, Hill caught 65 passes for 926 yards with 11 TDs.

The Cardinals tallied a 7-6 record last fall, and will open the 2008 season at Scheumann Stadium Thursday, Aug. 28, against Northeastern.

Mackey Award: Darius Hill, TE
