Zane Fakes, a graduate student in his final season on the Ball State football team, has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I Football First Team, which is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

One of four graduate students on the Capital One Academic All-America Team, Fakes is the first team tight end.  An exercise science major who graduated last May with a 3.59 grade-point average on the school’s 4.0 scale, Fakes has spent this fall working on a master’s degree.  A 2013 Campbell Trophy semifinalist, which recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the country for his academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership, Fakes was named to the All-Mid-American Conference First Team for a second straight season in 2013.  He tallied 37 catches for 382 yards and two touchdowns in the regular season.  Fakes has started 11 games in 2013 and 39 games in his career.  A two-time Academic All-MAC honoree, Fakes had a season high eight catches for a season high 96 yards at Northern Illinois.

Fakes helped the Cardinals to a 10-2 overall record in the regular season and a 7-1 mark in the MAC.  Ball State is expected to go to its second straight bowl game, under the direction of head coach Pete Lembo, when the bowl invitations are extended Sunday.
