Jonathan Newsome, a senior defensive end on the Ball State football team, has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Defensive Player of the Week.
Newsome tallied eight tackles, three tackles for loss, one forced fumble and two sacks in Ball State’s 55-14 win over Miami University in the regular season finale.
The Cardinals recorded their 10th win of the year to mark only the third team in Ball State’s 89 years of football to tally at least 10 victories in a single season. The three tackles for loss were a career high for Newsome, while the two sacks tied his career best.
Ball State, under the direction of third-year head coach Pete Lembo, ended the regular season with a 10-2 overall record and a 7-1 MAC mark. The Cardinals are anticipated a bowl berth with announcements scheduled for Sunday as to what game will invite Ball State.
