Scott Kovanda, a senior punter on the 2012 Ball State football team, has announced  he will compete in the 2013 National Football League Players Association Collegiate Bowl Jan. 19, at the Home Depot Center on the campus of California State University Dominguez Hills in Carson, Calif.

Kovanda, who has been invited to the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine, was one of three finalists for the 2012 Ray Guy Award, which goes to the nation's top collegiate punter. Kovanda, a captain for the Cardinals, helped Ball State rank second in the country in punt return defense, allowing only 1.0 yards per return and having only six punts returned this season. He pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line 27 times in 2012.

For one week preceding the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, participants will receive an in-depth introduction to the union - the primary resource for information on the business of football and how to succeed in the NFL and in post-football careers.

Pro football players and coaching legends will work with the game's future stars, giving them first-hand insight on what it takes to win on and off of the field. Herm Edwards and Dick Vermeil will serve as the head coaches for the American and National Teams. Player Ambassadors for the game include former NFL players Terrell Davis, Hank Baskett, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Lorenzo Neal and Andre Reed.

Kovanda helped the Cardinals to a 9-4 overall record in 2012 and a berth in the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl St. Petersburg.  He punted 44 times this season and pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line 27 times. Kovanda punted for 1,767 yards and a 40.2 average this season, including six punts of 50 or more yards. Kovanda had 223 career punts for 9,154 yards and a 41.0 career average. He ranks fourth all-time at Ball State in career punt yardage, fourth in career punts and third in career punt average.
