Football Announces Team Captains for 2012 Season
"Our team voted last week and made their top choices clear," Ball State head coach Pete Lembo says. "We have been emphasizing leadership and identifying leaders since our first team meeting back in January. Fortunately, our student-athletes had numerous quality teammates to choose from to fill these important roles. Connor, Travis, Keith and Scott will have a lot of help from some other veteran players in our program. The diversity of personalities and positions represented in this group will enable them to connect in a meaningful way with each player in the program."
Freeman, a senior linebacker, has started 35 of 36 games in his career and was a 2011 All-Mid-American Conference Team selection. He ranked ninth in the nation and second in the MAC in tackles last season with 119.
Kovanda, a senior punter, was a 2011 All-MAC Third Team selection and has been named to the Academic All-MAC team in 2010 and 2011. He was one of 10 semifinalists for the 2011 Ray Guy Award, which goes to the nation's most outstanding punter, after averaging 43.6 yards per punt as a junior.
Ryan, a junior wide receiver who earned honorable mention on the 2011 Academic All-MAC team, played in 11 games with two starts as a sophomore. Ryan managed 22 receptions for 228 yards with one touchdown for the Cardinals last year.
Wenning, a junior quarterback, has started the last 22 straight games for Ball State. He completed 287-of-449 passes for 2,786 yards in 2011 with 19 touchdown passes. Wenning set the Ball State school record for completions in a season, while his attempts ranked second and his passing yards were third all-time in the Cardinals record books.
Ball State will open the 2012 season Thurs., Aug. 30, in a home game vs. MAC foe Eastern Michigan at Scheumann Stadium.
