BOONE, N.C. - - The Ball State (1-0) field hockey team opened their 2014 season with a 4-1 win over Davidson (0-2) Sunday afternoon at Appalachian State’s Adcock Field.
The Cardinals’ four goals are the most they have scored in a game since Oct. 13, 2012 against Kent State. Sophomore Lexi Kavanaugh (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon Verona Sherrill) tied her career high with two goals, while senior Tori Widrick (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia/BC Cyclones) and redshirt junior Bianca Velez (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellam/Beach Premier) also found the back of the net for Ball State.
“Today’s win was a direct result of a total team effort,” Ball State field hockey head coach Beth Maddox said. “We had great leadership on the field and the fight the girls played with was consistent throughout the game. I am proud of them all and now we are focusing on Appalachian State.”
On defense, the Cardinals limited Davidson to just four shots on goal, with junior Shelby Henley (Novi, Mich./Novi) earning three saves for a .750 save percentage.
Widrick opened the scoring in the 20th minute with her 14th career goal. Kavanaugh followed with back-to-back markers to give Ball State a 3-0 advantage. Kavanaugh’s first goal, which was assisted by Widrick, held up to be the game winner, giving her three career game-winning tallies.
Davidson responded with its only goal of the game in the 52nd minute, before Ball State’s Velez capped the scoring five minutes later.
The Ball State field hockey team returns to action tomorrow, when they take on Appalachian State at 11 a.m. in Boone, N.C.
