Velez Scores inn Field Hockey's 1-0 Win Over Ohio

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State field hockey team earned a 1-0 shutout win over MAC foe Ohio Saturday afternoon at the BSU Turf Field at the Briner Sports Complex. Red-shirt sophomore Bianca Velez scored the goal that gave Ball State its first MAC win since the 2011 season.

With the win the Cardinals improve to 6-10 on the season and 1-3 in MAC play while the Bobcats drop to 6-9 on the year and 2-2 in conference action.

The teams went scoreless in the first half despite the Bobcats drawing five penalty corners and taking eight shots. The Cardinals were credited with one shot in the first 35 minutes. Velez made two defensive saves to go with sophomore goalie Shelby Henley’s four saves of the half.

The Cardinals were able to capitalize on one of its three penalty corners of the second half when junior Tori Widrick fed sophomore Natalie Jardell who set up Velez in the 60th minute. The goal marks the fourth of the season for Velez while Widrick and Jardell earned their fifth assist of the season respectively.

Junior Jenna Rosenberry earned a defensive save in the second half to go with nine saves from Henley. The Cardinals would end the game with 13 saves while the Bobcats’ had two.

Ohio held the advantage in shots (19-6) and penalty corners (11-3).­

NEXT UP: The Ball State Cardinals will travel to Indiana University to take on the Hoosiers on Sunday, Oct. 27th for a 1 p.m. game. The game will be streamed live on for a fee. Indiana holds the advantage in the all-time series at 16-5. The Cardinals earned a win last season over the Hoosiers when Allie White scored a last-second goal to down IU 3-2.
