ATHENS, Ohio – The Ball State field hockey team fell to Mid-American Conference foe No. 5 Miami, 2-1, in a first round contest of the MAC tournament Thursday afternoon at Pruitt Field. The RedHawks outshot the Cardinals, 13-10, and recorded a 10-6 advantage on penalty corners.
At 42:53 mark, freshman forward Kaitlin Thompson (San Carlos, Calif./St. Francis) tallied the first point on the scoreboard just past Miami’s sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Mueller. Freshman midfielder Sanne Hermans (The Hague, Holland) tallied the assist for the Cardinals, for her 10th career assist.
Then, the RedHawks netted the equalizer off a penalty corner at 50:24 mark and followed that performance with a second goal just five minutes later at 55:24 mark to secure the 2-1 win.
Hermans finished the contest with five shots, while senior forward Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) tallied two and senior defender Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy and freshman midfielder Leanne Goldblatt (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) each recorded one shot. Mitchell posted four saves in 70:00 of action in the cage, good for a 3-10 overall record on the season with the loss.
Miami advances to play No. 1 Ohio Friday at Noon, while the winner of No. 3 Central Michigan and No. 6 Missouri State has a second round match with No. 2 Kent State at 2:30 p.m. from Pruitt Field.
