Field Hockey Falls to MSU Sunday, Earns No. 4 Seed
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Two Cardinals scored goals, however the Ball State field hockey team fell to Mid-American Conference foe Missouri State, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at Plaster Stadium.
At 16:17 mark, the Bears’ Hillary Lawless put Missouri State on the board after she got past senior goalkeeper Chelsea Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) and tipped it in.
Then, the Cardinals netted the equalizer at 27:37 mark as senior forward Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) scored on a shot past netminder Andrea Bain, for her fifth goal of the season. Freshman defender Laura Malinoski (Eastampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) tallied the assist for the Cardinals, for her fourth career assist.
Missouri State followed that performance with a second goal just over five minutes before halftime at 29:58 mark.
Ball State returned in the second period at 47:37 mark as freshman midfielder Tori Widrick (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) tallied her fourth career goal.
Missouri State then scored twice to put the Bears up, 4-2, until Widrick scored her second goal of the game on a rebound from Bain.
Kuhn finished the contest with five shots, while senior defender Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) posted three, freshman forward Kaitlin Thompson (San Carlos, Calif./St. Francis) recorded two and freshman midfielder Sanne Hermans (The Hague, Holland) tallied one shot.
Mitchell and freshman Haley Fusting (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) split 70 minutes of action in the cage after combining for four saves.
Ball State earned the fourth seed in the MAC tournament and will travel to Athens, Ohio, to play No. 5 Miami in a first round contest Thursday at 11 a.m. from Pruitt Field.
