MUNCIE, Ind. – Freshmen Laura Malinoski (Easthampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) and Sanne Hermans (The Hague, Holland) scored for the Cardinals, however Ball State fell to No. 11 Iowa, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the BSU Turf Field.
The Hawkeyes outshot the Cardinals, 21-7, and connected on 5-of-15 shots on goal. Iowa got out to a quick start, as Becca Spengler tallied the first goal of the game at 1:33 mark past senior goalkeeper Chelsea Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico).
At 12:56 mark, Hermans opened up scoring for the Cardinals with her fourth goal of the season on a penalty corner. Malinoski provided the assist for BSU, for her third career assist.
The Cardinals then responded less than three minutes after the start of the second period as Malinoski scored her fifth goal of the season on a rebound from the Hawkeye’s netminder Kathleen McGraw.
Ball State senior forward Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) and Hermans each posted three shots on the day, while Mitchell recorded 10 saves in 70:00 of action in the cage, including eight in the second period.
Head coach Beth Maddox and the Cardinals return to Mid-American Conference action as the squad heads to Springfield, Mo. to close out league action with a contest versus Missouri State, Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
