Field Hockey Drops Tough 2-1 Decision to Ohio
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State field hockey team fell to Mid-American Conference opponent Ohio, 2-1 in overtime, Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at the BSU Turf Field. The Bobcats outshot the Cardinals, 14-3.
At 24:03 mark, Ohio tallied the first point on the scoreboard after Katherine Fenzel tipped in a shot just Ball State senior goalkeeper Chelsea Mitchell (Steven, Pa./Cocalico).
Then, the Cardinals netted the equalizer after a penalty corner at 32:32 mark. Freshman defender Laura Malinoski (Eastampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) tallied the goal on a rebound from the Bobcat’s netminder Jen McGill.
The contest headed into overtime tied 1-1 until 79:39 mark when Ohio’s Laura Mastro responded with a goal from the top left of the circle.Freshman midfielder Sanne Hermans (The Hague, Holland) finished the contest with two shots and Mitchell had an outstanding showing for Ball State after tallying nine saves in over 79:00 of action in the cage, including seven in the second period alone.
Head coach Beth Maddox and the Cardinals return to the BSU Turf Field Friday at 3 p.m. to face the Iowa Hawkeyes.
