MUNCIE, Ind. – Senior forward Devanny Kuhn scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Ball State field hockey team defeated Mid-American Conference foe Kent State, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the BSU Turf Field.

The Cardinals outshot the Golden Flashes, 13-9, and capitalized on 4-of-13 shots on goal.

At 16:56 mark, senior defender Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) opened up scoring for Ball State with her third goal of the season with a shot just in front of Kent State’s goalkeeper Jahna Jordan. Freshman midfielder Sanne Hermans (The Hague, Holland) provided the assist.

Less than a minute later, the Golden Flashes tallied the equalizer off a penalty stroke at 17:44 mark as Carla Johl posted a shot past the Cardinals’ senior goalkeeper Chelsea Mitchell (Steven, Pa./Cocalico). Kent State would follow that performance with a second goal at 20:54 mark as Debbie Bell fired a shot off a corner.

Lulow continued her hot shooting at 25:05 mark, scoring a second goal off a deflection from Hermans on a Ball State penalty corner. Kent State would respond less than two minutes after the start of the second period as Bell scored her second goal of the game.

The game would not see another goal until 59:53 mark when BSU responded with a goal by freshman midfielder Tori Widrick (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) off a penalty corner. Freshman forward Tarel Teach (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) provided the assist for the Cardinals.

Then, at 72:04 mark in overtime, Kuhn buried a shot from the left of Jordan to help secure the win for Ball State. Hermans once again provided the assist for BSU, for her ninth career assist.

Kuhn compeleted the contest with six shots, while Lulow, Hermans and freshman defender Laura Malinoski (Eastampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) tallied two shots apiece and Widrick recorded one shot. Mitchell finished the day with six saves during 72:04 of action in the cage.

Head coach Beth Maddox and the Cardinals return to the BSU Turf Field Saturday at 1 p.m. to face the Ohio Bobcats on Senior Day with seniors Kristen Falk (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), student coach Brittany Hammer, CJ Hermes (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy), Kuhn, Lulow, Caitlin Maguire (Louisville, Ky./Presentation Academy), Mitchell and Katie Norris (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy).
