MUNCIE, Ind. -  The Ball State field hockey team had two student-athletes sign National Letters of Intent to join the program for the 2014 as announced by head coach Beth Maddox on Thursday. The Cardinals welcome Abbey Main and Carley Shannon.

“We are thrilled to add two amazing individuals to our team for the fall,” said Maddox. “We know that they will come in and fit right in with our team.”

Abbey Main is a native of West Chester, Ohio and is a two-year letterwinner for head coach Elli Workum at Ursuline Academy. Main helped guide her team to the state semifinals as a senior and led the Southwest Field Hockey League (SWOFL) in assists and points. She was named as an All-Star Selection by the Cincinnati Enquirer and was named to the First Team All-SWOFL in her senior season. A member of the National Honor Society, Main earned a spot on the Academic All-Ohio team during her career at Ursuline. Main was also a selection to the National Futures Championship team. Main played for the Top Dog club team under the direction of Jen Willis as a midfielder.

“Abbey is an incredibly hard worker and is relentless on the field,” said Maddox. “She is a smart player who goes out of her way to make her teammates look good.”

A four-sport athlete in high school, Carley Shannon hails from Williamsburg, Va., where she was a four-year letterwinner for Bruton High School field hockey head coach Joe Dougherty. Shannon led her team to an 18-2 record in 2013 that led to the Conference 33 Championships. Shannon earned Conference 33 Player of the Year honors and was also named to the All-Region First Team, All-State First Team, All-Virginia Gazetete Team and Daily Press All-Star Field hockey team nods as a senior. In her career at Bruton, Shannon netted 49 goals and had 115 assists. Shannon excelled in the classroom as well as she was a member of the All “A” Honor Roll, National Honor Society, Chemistry Honor Society, Math Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. Shannon played her club field hockey for the Peninsula Youth Field Hockey Association. In 2013, Shannon was team captain and helped guide her squad to a fourth place finish at the Disney Showcase.

“Carley will impact our team immediately,” said Maddox. “She is an amazing athlete and a fierce competitor.”
