Tyson Mathews, a 2006 graduate of Ball State, has been named an assistant director of media relations for the Cardinals. He will serve as the school's primary contact for men's basketball and women's soccer plus work with additional sports to be determined.
Mathews served as a student assistant in Ball State's media relations office from 2004-06 and then spent from 2006-08 as a graduate assistant for the Cardinals in media relations. He spent the summer of 2005 as an intern in NCAA Statistics Services.
From 2008-12, Mathews served as an assistant director in the UAB athletics media relations office. He served as the primary contact for women's basketball and the secondary contact for football this past season. Mathews also served as a media relations contact for women's tennis, women's bowling, baseball and women's volleyball in his tenure at UAB.
A native of Muncie, Ind., and a graduate of Delta High School, Mathews served as a sportswriter for the Muncie Star Press from 2004-06 and for the New Castle Courier times in 2003-04. In addition, he served a news reporting internship with the Hartford City News-Times and covered on-campus events for the Ball State Daily News in 2004.
Mathews graduated cum laude from Ball State's Honor's College in 2006 with a degree in journalism and is pursuing his master's degree at Ball State.
