CLEVELAND, Ohio - - Ball State University was the recipient of the 2014 Institutional Sportsmanship Award presented Tuesday, May 13 at the MAC Honors Dinner, as part of the conference annual spring meetings at the Cleveland Renaissance Hotel.
The Institutional Sportsmanship Award evolved from the conference's recent strategic plan as the value of sportsmanship was the center of the conference mission statement and core values. In the voting process, every MAC institution received votes, which further supports that sportsmanship is emphasized and expected from our student-athletes, coaches and administrators across each and every MAC campus.
"The Institutional Sportsmanship Award is a positive reinforcement of one of the values that we as a conference and each of our member institutions all possess as a core value of who we are and how we conduct ourselves in athletic competition," MAC commissioner Jon A. Steinbrecher said.
In the four-year history of the MAC Institutional Sportsmanship Award, Ball State is only the second MAC institution to claim the title. Miami University won the inaugural award in 2011, and went on to reclaim the honor the next two years.
“In essence, this award recognizes the manner in which we treat teams when they visit our campus,” Ball State director of intercollegiate athletics Bill Scholl said. “It represents a combination of tremendous sportsmanship displayed by our teams and coaches, as well as the sportsmanlike behavior of all of our staff that interfaces with visiting teams. This truly represents a collective effort by our entire department. Every one of us should take great pride in being recognized in this way by our peers in the MAC.”
