MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State University’s women’s volleyball and cross country programs were honored Wednesday by the NCAA for earning exemplary marks in the latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR).

Both programs received public recognition awards for their commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes.

The awards are based on multi-year APR scores and go to teams whose scores rank in the top 10 percent within their respective sports. This year’s scores are based on the APR from the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years.

“I am very proud of the efforts made by our women’s volleyball and cross country student-athletes to excel in the classroom and graduate from Ball State in a timely manner,” Ball State director of intercollegiate athletics Bill Scholl said. “I must also commend the coaches in both programs and our Student-Athlete Support Services department as it truly was a team effort that led to these great results.”

The Mid-American Conference had a total of 21 programs recognized Wednesday, but only three league schools had more than Ball State’s two awards. The Cardinals had multiple teams honored for the first time in five years.

The Ball State cross country team has now earned the award two years in a row and a total of three times in the seven years of the public recognition program. This is the second time the women’s volleyball team has been honored.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. It accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Multi-year APR scores for all Division I teams will be announced June 11.
