Soccer Preps for Season with 1-1 Draw against IUPUI
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State soccer team created a number of scoring opportunities Saturday evening in a 1-1 draw against IUPUI in an exhibition contest at the Briner Sports Complex.
“I thought it was good competition for us,” Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. “We were able to use a lot of different players and see how our newcomers would handle a game situation. Both teams utilized their benches to see what players were able to do.
“We also had a chance to utilize different systems of play to see where our strengths and weaknesses are. We got some information that will help us to be better and be ready for the real deal next week.”
Senior Jasmine Moses recorded the goal for Ball State in the 17th minute, opening the scoring with a header off a free kick ball from Franziska Sottner. IUPUI’s Alyssa Fox answered three minutes into the second of three 30-minute periods, scoring after the Jaguars were awarded a free kick inside the box.
Ball State had plenty of chances of its own in the second period, including a goal from Elaina Musleh that was negated by an offside call. Kelsey Wendlandt just missed wide on a shot across the net, and IUPUI goalkeeper Catherine Schmidt made an outstretched save on a laser from Lauren Hall.
Sottner nearly put the Cardinals back ahead in the third and final period but hit the far post on a shot in the 70th minute.
Saturday marked the only exhibition action of the season for Ball State, which opens the regular season at home Friday, Aug. 22 against IPFW. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at the Briner Sports Complex as the Cardinals play the first of their nine scheduled home games.
