MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State head soccer coach Craig Roberts will assist the Haiti Women’s National Team in its preparations for World Cup qualifying.
Haiti coach Shek Borkowski, who also coaches the FC Indiana women’s professional team based out of South Bend, recently invited Roberts to join his staff.
“This is a great opportunity to coach at the national level,” Roberts said. "It will be a tremendous experience to work with someone as accomplished as Shek and to coach against some of the best players in the world.”
Roberts has coached against Haiti each of the past two years when Borkowski has brought his team to Muncie as part of its training during the spring. The Cardinals won both of those contests.
Roberts leads a Ball State program that has improved in each of his four seasons as head coach. Last year, the Cardinals posted their best record since 2007 at 11-7-4 and reached the championship game of the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the first time ever.
The Ball State soccer program has had several connections to various national teams in recent years. Last summer, assistant coach Marcie Klebanow guided the United States Junior Girls’ National Team to the gold medal at the Maccabiah Games in Israel.
Ball State rising sophomore Lauren Hall is playing for the U-20 Honduran National Team, while Pavla Benyrova, who completed her collegiate career for the Cardinals in 2012, has played for the Czech Republic National Team.
A pair of incoming Cardinals also has international experience. Felice Hermans, a member of the U-17 Dutch National Team, and Franziska Sottner, a member of the U-19 Austrian National Team, will join the program in the fall.
