Soccer Program Adds Eight from Class of 2014

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Head coach Craig Roberts and the Ball State soccer team have landed eight high school standouts to join the Cardinals next season.

Here is a look at the incoming group, which will compete for Ball State starting this fall …

Shannon Greeley, Forward (Mequon, Wis./Homestead HS)
Brooklynn Guerrettaz, Defender (Avon, Ind./Avon HS)
Alyssa Heintschel, Goalkeeper (Oregon, Ohio/Clay HS)
Felice Hermans, Defender (Maastricht, Netherlands/Caland Lyceum Amsterdam)
Alyssa Kohanowski, Forward (Muskego, Wis./Muskego HS)
Sam Mattlin, Defender (Guilford, Ind./Mother of Mercy [Ohio] HS)
Franziska Sottner, Midfielder (Vienna, Austria/Liese Prokop Privatschule)
Lucy Walton, Forward/Midfielder (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg HS)

“Our coaching staff is excited about this class,” Roberts said. “We believe we can build on the success of last season. Competing in the Mid-American Conference final provided many of our young players with priceless experience. We believe our mature returning talent combined with the incoming freshman class will be highly competitive.

“As a program, we are always striving to improve our individual player performance, team performance and level of student-athlete we can attract. We believe we have met these credentials this year and cannot wait to get going.”

Shannon Greeley, Forward
Mequon, Wis./Homestead HS

High School: Entering her fourth year as a letterwinner at Homestead High School for coach Rich Dorn … selected as her team’s Most Valuable Player as a junior in 2013 … an all-area conference honorable mention selection in 2013 … played club soccer for North Shore United and coach Sinisa Angelovski … helped her club team to a state championship in 2013 … selected to attend the 2012 USL Super Y-League Olympic Development Program National Camp.

Personal: Full name is Shannon Elizabeth Greeley … daughter of Jack and Jackie Greeley … has two brothers, Alex and Chris … born Nov. 13, 1995 in Mequon, Wis. … undecided on a college major.

Quoting Coach Roberts: “Shannon has a talent for beating players in one-on-one situations. She has great vision and awareness. She also has a great work rate. All these assets will allow her to compete for a starting midfield position right off the bat.”

Brooklynn Guerrettaz, Defender
Avon, Ind./Avon HS

High School: Lettered three years at Avon High School for coach Eric Nance … helped her team to an overall record of 44-7-10 during her career … Avon finished 18-2-3 and won a state championship during her senior year in 2013 … a third-team all-state selection as a senior by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association … a two time academic all-state pick and a two time honorable mention selection on the All-Hoosier Crossroads Conference Team … played five years of club soccer for Zionsville ’96 Select I and coach Mike Beckner … helped her team to a state title in 2012 and a pair of state runner-up finishes in 2011 and 2013 … owns a 4.026 GPA at Avon.

Personal: Full name is Brooklynn Faye Guerrettaz … daughter of Mark and Cynthia Guerrettaz … has one brother, Bradley … born Aug. 28, 1995 in Danville, Ind. … undecided on a college major.

Quoting Coach Roberts: “Brooklynn is an excellent defender who loves to get forward. She has the ability to get forward from an outside back position. When called upon to defend, she uses her natural strength and speed. Brooklynn is a very quick learner and will develop into a solid player for Ball State.”

Alyssa Heintschel, Goalkeeper
Oregon, Ohio/Clay HS

High School: Lettered four years at Clay High School for coach Scott Warner … three-time Goalkeeper of the Year in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference … four-time first-team all-conference selection … four-time all-district choice, including three times on the first team … recorded 24 career shutouts, including nine as a junior and eight as a senior … posted a 0.94 goals against average with 97 saves as a senior … made a total of 412 saves over her career … played for the Pacesetter Soccer Club and coach Danny Fisher … helped her club team to a state championship (2008), a state runner-up finish (2013) and a Mead Cup championship (2009) … also lettered in basketball at Clay … ranks fifth in her high school class academically … a National Honor Society member … achieved commended status in the National Merit Scholarship program.

Personal: Full name is Alyssa Renee Heintschel … daughter of Eric and Cyndi Heintschel … has one sister, Samantha, and two brothers, Logan and Mason … born March 21, 1996 in Toledo, Ohio … intends to major in chemistry.

Quoting Coach Roberts: “Alyssa has excellent size and presence along with great technical skills. She is very vocal and not scared to take on big challenges. Alyssa will compete for the goalkeeper position right away. Her attitude and great work ethic are exemplary.”

Felice Hermans, Defender
Maastricht, Netherlands/Caland Lyceum Amsterdam

Club/National Team: Played for CTO Talenteam/Ajax and coach Maria van Kortenhoff … competed on a girls’ team in the first division of a boys’ league … helped her under-15 team to a second-place finish in the 2011 Dutch Championships for district teams … captained her under-17 team to a third-place finish at the same championships in 2012 … scored three goals in those championships … played on the under-17 Dutch National Team (B) in 2013 … also plays tennis.

Personal: Full name is Felice Sophia Louisa Hermans … daughter of Richard Hermans and Patricia Hermans-Roosebeek … has one sister, Danique … born July 24, 1996 in Maastricht, Netherlands … intends to major in exercise science.

Quoting Coach Roberts: “Felice will provide added experience and solid defensive qualities. Her size, strength and excellent heading ability will add to our aerial power and will be a big threat on set pieces. She has been exposed to the game at the highest level and has been able to produce the performances needed to handle it.”

Alyssa Kohanowski, Forward
Muskego, Wis./Muskego HS

High School: Entering her fourth year as a letterwinner at Muskego High School for coach Eric Hess … a two-time All-Classic 8 Conference selection, including first-team as a sophomore in 2012 … scored 22 goals in that sophomore season and followed it up with 13 as a junior, winning the Golden Boot award each year … played 10 years with the Croatian Eagles Soccer Club and one year with SC Waukesha for coach Xavi Rico … trained four years in the Wisconsin Olympic Development Program … also a three-year letterwinner in basketball at Muskego … a member of the National Honor Society … owns a 3.4 GPA.

Personal: Full name is Alyssa Rhea Kohanowski ... daughter of Peter and Ginnie Kohanowski ... has one brother, Luke … born Feb. 19, 1996 in Muskego, Wis. ... intends to major in health sciences.

Quoting Coach Roberts: “Aly is a strong, quick forward who will add to our offensive power next season. She is outstanding at creating opportunities for her teammates. In addition, she has a solid shot that will be a threat for any defense.”

Sam Mattlin, Defender
Guilford, Ind./Mother of Mercy [Ohio] HS

High School: Lettered four years at Mother of Mercy for coach Mike Rust … a three-time first-team All-Girls Greater Catholic League selection … three-time Southwest Ohio All-Star choice … team captain as a senior … helped her team to a 26-9-10 record over her final three seasons … played club soccer for Kings Hammer Academy and coach Tiffany Roberts … also played one year of basketball at Mother of Mercy … owns a 3.9 GPA.

Personal: Full name is Samantha Lori Mattlin … daughter of Scott and Julie Mattlin … has one sister, Danielle, and one brother, Hunter … born Aug. 11, 1995 in Cincinnati, Ohio … intends to major in communications.

Quoting Coach Roberts: “Sam is an all-round athlete. She is a versatile player who has the ability to play different positions on the field. She has great strength and speed. She is a very determined player who has a great attitude.”

Franziska Sottner, Midfielder
Vienna, Austria/Liese Prokop Privatschule

Club/National Team: Played five years for USC Landhaus and coach Thomas Flogel … helped her team to two fourth-place finishes and one Cup finals appearance … played two years with the U-17 Austrian National Team and two years with the U-19 team.

Personal: Full name is Franziska Tabitha Sottner … daughter of Hermann Sottner and Lisann Boczkowski … has one brother, Fabia Schack … born Aug. 3, 1995 in Vienna, Austria … intends to major in biology.

Quoting Coach Roberts: “Franzi brings an immense amount of talent to the midfield. In 2013, we graduated two outstanding midfielders who contributed a lot to the success of the team. To replace them is a challenge for any coaching staff. However, I believe Franzi will be able to pick up where we left off. Her high level of technical ability will serve as great foundation for the 2014 Ball State team. In addition, her national team experience will serve as a great asset.”

Lucy Walton, Forward/Midfielder
Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg HS

High School: Lettered four years at Perrysburg High School for coaches Jorge Diaz and Margaret Bernard … helped her team to a record of 71-6-7 during her career, including a perfect 23-0-0 mark and a state championship her junior year in 2012 … a three-time All-Northern Lakes League selection, including first-team recognition as a senior … finished her senior year with eight goals and six assists … recorded 39 goals and 28 assists in her career … helped her team to conference championships in each of her final three seasons … played nine years for the Greater Toledo Futbol Club with coaches Josh Weinberg and Mike Aubry plus one year with the Pacesetter Soccer Club and coach Crystal Dye … also lettered one year in track at Perrysburg.

Personal: Full name is Lucy Elizabeth Walton … daughter of Jeff and Carolyn Walton … has two brothers, Jack and George, and one sister, Anna … born Aug. 29, 1995 in Toledo, Ohio … intends to major in elementary education.

Quoting Coach Roberts: “Lucy is a very skilled and determined player who I believe will have an impact on the Mid-American Conference. As a midfielder, she has a great work rate and technical ability. Her strong desire to win will be instrumental in our success next season.”
