MUNCIE, Ind. -- Three Ball State soccer players were tabbed to the 2013 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team as announced Wednesday by the league office.

Defenders Victoria Jacobs, Kelsey Shapiro and Cailey Starck were selected to the team, while seven other Cardinals earned honorable mention honors.

Jacobs, Shapiro and Starck each started all 22 games for Ball State in 2013. They rarely, if ever, came off the field for a defensive unit that ranked first in the MAC and among the top 50 nationally in goals against average (0.81).

Jacobs, a product of Oakville, Ontario, owns a 3.482 GPA as a psychology major. The junior led Ball State with five goals and tied for third in the MAC with three game-winning goals.

Shapiro, a senior captain, owns a 3.838 GPA as a dietetics major. The Farmington Hills, Mich., product played every minute of every game on the back line. She scored one goal and tallied two assists.

Starck, a junior from Coto de Caza, Calif., owns a 3.609 GPA as a special education major. She finished second on the team with five assists on the year.

In order to be nominated for Academic All-MAC recognition, student-athletes must have a GPA of at least 3.2 and participate in at least 50 percent of their team’s games. From the nominations, the team is selected by a vote of the league’s faculty athletics representatives.

In addition to the three Ball State players named to the team, the following seven Cardinals earned honorable mention recognition: Michelle Blok, Lindsay Kempf, Maimee Morris, Madison Oyer, Nicole Pembleton, Layne Schramm and Becca Sutton.
