MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team played Toledo to a 2-2 draw in double overtime Friday in a Mid-American Conference West Division matchup at the Briner Sports Complex.

The Cardinals fell behind early, rallied to take a 2-1 lead on goals from Michelle Blok and Gabby Veldman, and then saw Toledo find the equalizer in the 76th minute. The teams then went the remainder of regulation and both 10-minute overtimes scoreless.

It was the first tie in conference play for Ball State, which is now 9-4-2 (4-2-1 MAC). Toledo’s record stands at 5-9-1 (2-4-1 MAC). Ball State will continue its home weekend Sunday with a 1 p.m. game against Northern Illinois as the Cardinals celebrate Senior Day.

In Friday’s game, Toledo grabbed the lead in the 15th minute on a goal from Angelica Hernandez. That lead stood until almost halftime before Blok’s fourth goal of the season. After taking a pass from Veldman in front of the net, Blok’s first attempt was stopped by Toledo keeper Sam Tiongson, but she was right there to put the rebound in.

Less than a minute later, Ball State earned a penalty kick after a Toledo foul in the box, but Kelsey Shapiro’s attempt sailed over the goal.

The Cardinals managed to grab the lead in the 62nd minute, though, when Veldman put in a rebound shot for her first career goal after the Rockets saved a Jasmine Moses attempt. But 13 minutes later, Toledo’s Rachael MacLeod -- the leading scorer in the MAC -- beat a defender and placed a shot into the right side of the net to tie things up again and send the game to overtime.

Ball State had the best opportunities in the extra periods, but Tiongson was there to stop three tough challenges by the Cardinals. Maimee Morris put two strong shots on the goal, but Tiongson saved both of them along with a driving ball from Leah Mattingly in the closing seconds.

Tiongson finished the game with 12 saves, while Brooke Dennis stopped five shots for the Cardinals.

Ball State gained some ground on MAC leader Western Michigan with the draw. The Broncos suffered their first loss in conference play against Kent State to fall to 5-1-1 in league play. Kent State and Eastern Michigan are also just ahead of the Cardinals at 5-2 in the race for the top seed in the MAC Tournament.
