MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team will look to build on its impressive opening weekend when it hits the road for a Friday contest at IPFW.
Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Hefner Soccer Complex as the Cardinals take the field for their first regular-season road game. Live stats will be available at gomastodons.com.
Ball State enters the meeting at 2-0 on the season, while IPFW is 1-1. The teams have already played one common opponent with both defeating Northern Iowa last week on the Panthers’ swing through Indiana.
IPFW’s other result last weekend was a 2-1, double-overtime loss to Wright State, while Ball State backed up its victory over Northern Iowa with a 3-0 shutout of Green Bay.
The Cardinals did all their damage in the second half of their first two games, out-scoring the competition 5-0 after halftime. Michelle Blok, who scored both goals in the win over Northern Iowa, is the reigning Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
The Cardinals also picked up goals last weekend from Kelsey Wendlandt, Victoria Jacobs and Erin Greeley, while Kelsey Shapiro and Cailey Starck each recorded a pair of assists over the first two games.
Layne Schramm and Brooke Dennis split time at goalkeeper in the first weekend, combining to allow just one goal, which came on a Northern Iowa corner kick that curled its way into the corner of the net.
For IPFW, Sam Pavlika has played every minute between the posts and stopped 10 of the 12 shots she has faced so far. Offensively, Rachel Good is the top returning scorer for the Mastodons after tallying four goals last season.
Ball State is unbeaten all-time against IPFW at 8-0-1, but the past two meetings have been tight, 1-0 shutout victories for the Cardinals. The Mastodons are coming off the best season in program history after posting a 10-8-1 record last year. They were picked second in this season’s Summit League preseason poll.
Friday's game is the only one this weekend for Ball State. The Cardinals will return home next weekend for a Sept. 6 game against Eastern Illinois and a Sept. 8 matchup with Tennessee Tech at the Briner Sports Complex.
