MUNCIE, Ind. -- College Sports Madness selected two Ball State defenders to its 2012 Madness All-Mid-American Conference teams for women's soccer.

Pavla Benyrova was a first-team pick, while Skylar Chew was named to the second team. The pair helped to anchor a Ball State back line that limited opponents to fewer than five shots on goal per game and posted five shutouts in 2012.

Benyrova, a product of Prague, Czech Republic, started all 20 games and played all but 44 minutes in her second and final season at Ball State. She scored one goal -- the game-winner on a penalty kick against Buffalo -- and also recorded three assists on the season. Two of those assists came in Ball State's 2-1 overtime victory over Xavier. She was also an all-conference selection by the MAC coaches.

Chew, a senior from Mason, Ohio, started all 20 games this season on the Ball State back line and played every minute. She scored two goals, including the game-winner against Bowling Green with 35 seconds remaining in the second overtime period. Chew ranks among the Cardinals' all-time leaders with 6,178 minutes played in her career.

Both Chew and Benyrova were named MAC Defensive Player of the Week once this season. They also both recently earned Capital One Academic All-District honors.

The duo helped Ball State to an overall record of 8-7-5 this fall as the Cardinals improved their winning percentage for the third straight year. The team posted its best conference record since 2007 with a league mark of 5-3-3.
