MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State soccer third-year head coach Craig Roberts announced a 20-game regular season schedule for the 2012 season, including a program-record 11 home games at the Briner Sports Complex.
"Our home and away schedule will allow us to be exposed to a variety of different styles of play," Roberts said. "Each game will be instrumental in our development for the Mid-American Conference season as we have a good balance of in and out of region teams. We are fortunate to host 12 games at our new Briner Sports Complex this year. "
The Cardinals officially open the 2012 season on the road as it travels to former Mid-American Conference foe Marshall August 17.
The Cardinals open the home portion of the regular season with its first Ball State Soccer Tournament as it hosts four games. Western Kentucky and Xavier will meet in the first game Aug. 24, while Ball State faces Northern Kentucky in game two. The teams will reverse opponents Aug. 26 as Western Kentucky and Northern Kentucky meet before the Cardinals battle Xavier to cap the weekend.
Ball State continues its home ways the following weekend hosting instate foes IUPUI (Aug. 31) and IPFW (Sept. 2). The Cardinals hit the road for their longest road trip in program history, travelling to Honolulu, Hawaii for games against host Hawaii (Sept. 7) and Detroit (Sept. 8) in the Outrigger Hotels & Resort Soccer Classic.
"In the organization of our schedule, I wanted to incorporate a memorable location for our special senior class," Roberts said. "I believe the trip to Hawaii will provide our student-athletes with a unique and memorable experience, but at the same time provide us with the necessary competitiveness needed in preparation for the MAC."
The Cardinals return to Muncie for their last non-conference game hosting Butler (Sept. 16).
Ball State opens Mid-American Conference play Sept 21 as it hosts Buffalo before welcoming in Akron Sept 23 in the opening weekend. The Cardinals also host league opponents Eastern Michigan (Oct. 5), Western Michigan (Oct. 7), Bowling Green (Oct. 19) and Central Michigan (Oct. 21). Ball State travels to MAC teams Kent State (Sept. 28), Ohio (Sept. 30), Toledo (Oct. 12), Northern Illinois (Oct. 14) and Miami (Oct. 25).
The 2012 MAC Tournament opens with quarterfinal play October 28 before semifinals and finals action Nov. 2 and 4, respectively. As always, the MAC Tournament quarterfinals will be held on campus sites while the semifinals and finals are held at the highest remaining seed.
The Cardinals' 12 regular season home games are the most in a single season in the 14-year history of the program. Ball State hosted 11 games during the regular season in the 2000 season, its second season of existence.
