Soccer Program Signs Seven Recruits for 2013

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Coach Craig Roberts and the Ball State soccer team have announced the addition of seven high school standouts in the Cardinals' 2013 recruiting class.

The following players have signed National Letters of Intent and will join the Ball State soccer program next year:

Courtney Chambers, Forward (Brampton, Ontario/St. Edmund Campion)
Brooke Dennis, Goalkeeper (Wauconda, Ill./Mundelein HS)
Madeline Malatestinic, Midfielder/Forward (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit HS)
Leah Mattingly, Defender (Floyds Knobs, Ind./Our Lady of Providence HS)
Chay McNitt, Midfielder (Fenton, Mich./Hartland HS)
Orla Travers-Gillespie, Defender (London, Ontario/Catholic Central HS)
Gabby Veldman, Forward/Midfielder (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka Marian HS)

High School: Played at St. Edmund Campion for coaches Jenna Bryne and Jennifer Garthson ... will play her senior season of high school in the spring ... owns 20 goals in her high school career ... scored six goals as a junior and was named MVP of the 2012 Campion Senior Soccer Team ... invited in 2012 to play for Team Jamaica in the U17 CONCACAF Finals ... also competed in track and basketball for coach Joann Johnston at Campion ... 2010 MVP and two-time captain of her basketball teams ... part of 2011 Region of Peel 400-meter relay championship team and two-time MVP in the 2010 and 2011 track seasons ... named Campion's junior athlete of the year in 2010 as a freshman ... plays club soccer with the London Gryphons for head coach Abe Hadzic.

Personal: Full name is Courtney Lauren Chambers ... daughter of Mrs. and Mr. J Chambers ... born Aug. 4, 1995 in Georgetown, Ontario ... intends to major in secondary education.

Quoting Coach Roberts: "Courtney is an outstanding athlete with an exceptional work ethic. She is a quality forward who has an eye for the goal. I believe Courtney will bring more of an offensive threat for Ball State next year. She is an individual who has been able to compete with Jamaica on the national level, and that experience will serve her well as she plays within our competitive conference."

Brooke Dennis, Goalkeeper
Wauconda, Ill. (Mundelein HS)

High School: Played her freshman year at Mundelein before focusing on her club team ... played club soccer for Sockers FC Chicago and coach Trey Bradberry ... competed in the Elite Clubs National League in 2011 and 2012 ... played in the United States Youth Soccer Association National League in 2009 and 2010 ... helped her team to the finals of the 2009 Illinois Youth Soccer Association State Cup and the 2009 Presidents' Day Cup ... made 134 saves and allowed 12 goals over 16 games during the 2010 season ... voted the No. 1 female goalkeeper at the 2011 Camp Shutout.

Personal: Full name is Brooke Elizabeth Dennis ... daughter of Robert and Sue Dennis ... born Oct. 28, 1994 ... has one sister, Shaina, and one brother, Jacob  ... owns a 4.0 GPA ... intends to major in psychology.

Quoting Coach Roberts: "Brooke is a fearless competitor with outstanding fundamentals. She has been coached by some of the best goalkeeper coaches around and therefore will be well groomed to compete in the Mid-American Conference. She has great hands and is consistent. Her bravery to come for crosses is outstanding. Brooke will be an asset to our team."

Madeline Malatestinic, Midfielder/Forward
Indianapolis, Ind. (Brebeuf Jesuit HS)

High School: Lettered four years at Brebeuf for coach Gary Yohe ... helped her team to an overall record of 46-20-18 over her four years ... started all 84 games of her high school career, logging 29 goals and 25 assists ... posted nine goals and nine assists as a senior ... had 12 goals and 10 assists as a junior ... first-team all-state as a senior and third-team all-state as a junior ... also a two-time all-district choice and two-time team offensive MVP ... three-time All-Marion County selection ... helped her team to three sectional championships (2009, 2011, 2012), two Marion County titles (2010, 2011) and the first regional crown in school history (2012) ... played club soccer for ZYSA Select 95 and coach McKinley Jones III ... helped her team to the 2012 Indiana State Cup title and a semifinal appearance at the 2010 state cup.

Personal: Full name is Madeline Renee Malatestinic ... daughter of Michael and Rhonda Malatestinic ... born Feb. 5, 1995 in Indianapolis, Ind. ... has one sister, Olivia ... owns a 3.12 GPA ... undecided on a college major.

Quoting Coach Roberts: "Maddie is a tenacious outside player who has the ability to beat opponents in one-on-one situations. Her pace is exceptional and will cause many problems for any defenders competing against her. She is an excellent crosser of the ball and has an endless work rate. I believe Maddie will develop into a strong competitor with the 2013 squad."

Leah Mattingly, Defender
Floyds Knobs, Ind. (Our Lady of Providence HS)

High School: Lettered four years at Providence for coach Dave Smith ... helped her team to a 61-12-8 record and 48 shutouts over her four years ... posted 36 career goals and 26 career assists ... scored 16 goals as team captain her senior year ... helped Providence to an undefeated season (21-0-2) and a state championship as a junior in 2011, followed by a state runner-up finish her senior year ... also guided her team to three sectional championships, two regional titles and two semi-state crowns ... a two-time first-team all-state selection by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association ... a four-time all-area choice and the News and Tribune Area Player of the Year as a senior ... an all-district choice as both a junior and a senior ... played club soccer out of Louisville, Ky., for Javanon Soccer Club and coach Joe Williams ... helped her team to five Kentucky State Cup championships, the 2012 Disney Soccer Showcase championship and the 2010 Vulcan Cup title ... participated in the Kentucky State Olympic Development Program for three years ... also competes in track and field at Providence.

Personal: Full name is Leah Louise Mattingly ... daughter of Robert, Jr., and Cindy Mattingly ... born March 8, 1995 in Clarksville, Ind. ... has one brother, Andrew, who is a goalkeeper at Huntington University ... owns a 3.89 GPA ... intends to major in athletic training.

Quoting Coach Roberts: "Leah is an outstanding defender who will help solidify a very strong back line. She has excellent technical and tactical awareness. She is a committed and dedicated player who I believe will have a big impact on the Mid-American Conference. Leah is a versatile player who not only is exceptional on the back line but equally competent when pushed onto the front line."

Chay McNitt, Midfielder
Fenton, Mich. (Hartland HS)

High School: Will play her senior season at Hartland this spring for coach Andrew Kartsounes ... recorded 10 goals and 14 assists as a junior on her way to all-county and all-academic honors ... helped her team win the Kensington Lakes Activities Association championship ... played club soccer for the Michigan Hawks and coaches Michele Krzisnik and Doug Landefeld ... her under-17 team was a finalist at the U.S. Club Soccer National Championships ... her under-16 team won the Region II U.S. Youth Soccer title, placed third at the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships and finished seventh at the U.S. Club Soccer National Championships.

Personal: Full name is Chaylynne Christine McNitt ... daughter of Scott and Lisa McNitt ... born June 14, 1995 in Howell, Mich. ... has one brother, Brayden ... owns a 3.56 GPA ... intends to major in telecommunications or criminology.

Quoting Coach Roberts: "Chay is a battler. She is versatile enough to play inside or out. Her individual technical skills allow her to play accurate passes and maintain possession. She is very strong on the ball and has a great shot. Chay has a strong desire to win. Winning is something that we strive for, and this young lady possesses qualities that will allow us achieve it."

Orla Travers-Gillespie, Defender
London, Ontario (Catholic Central HS)

High School: Played for coach Wendy Glover at Catholic Central ... played club soccer for North London Galaxy and coach Abe Hadzic ... her 2012 team won the Ontario Youth Soccer League Under-18 championship ... helped her team to the Ontario Cup finals in back-to-back years, including a championship in 2011 ... her 2011 team was also a national finalist.

Personal: Full name is Orla Maud Travers-Gillespie ... daughter of David Travers-Gillespie and Eavan Travers ... born Jan. 15, 1994 in London, Ontario ... has one sister, Ciara, and two brothers, Brian and Ashton ... intends to major in marketing.

Quoting Coach Roberts: "Hard-nosed and committed are two characteristics Orla possesses. Once she puts her mind to something, she is hard to hold back. She is a wall on defense. Orla is a leader and will be part of the defensive foundation of the 2013 team. She has exceptional heading ability and therefore is sure to be a threat on all set pieces."

Gabby Veldman, Forward/Midfielder
South Bend, Ind. (Mishawaka Marian HS)

High School: Earned four letters at Mishawaka Marian for coach Djamel Charmat ... helped her team to an overall record of 54-17-5 over her four years and a Class 1A state championship in 2012 ... recorded 91 career goals ... scored 33 goals as a junior, 20 as a sophomore and senior, and 18 as a freshman ... third-team all-state as a junior and all-state honorable mention as a senior ... a four-time All-Northern Indiana Conference selection (first team three times) and conference MVP as a junior ... three-time all-district selection ... played club soccer for the Indiana Invaders and coach Greg Schenk from 2009-10 ... helped her team to the state cup finals ... also a two-year letterwinner in basketball at Mishawaka Marian.

Personal: Full name is Gabrielle Nicole Veldman ... daughter of Todd and Julie Veldman ... born Dec. 22, 1994 in South Bend, Ind. ... has three sisters, Denise, Jessica and Mia, and one brother, Lucas ... owns a 3.4 GPA ... undecided on a college major.

Quoting Coach Roberts: "Gabby brings great pace and tenacity. She is a player who continues to develop each time I see her. I believe once she arrives, she will flourish in the environment set here at Ball State. She has great shot and never-give-up attitude. She is very academically focused, and that is a quality we look for in each of our student-athletes."
