MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's basketball team dropped a 68-48 decision to in-state rival Indiana State on Tuesday evening at Worthen Arena. Jauwan Scaife and Majok Majok led the way for the Cardinals with 16 and 15 points, respectively.

The Cardinals suffered their first loss and dropped to 2-1 on the season, while the Sycamores won their second straight to improve to 3-1 on the year.

Scaife, who scored the first nine points of the game for Ball State, also grabbed four boards, dished out one assist and had two steals. Majok recorded his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

The Cardinals shot 16-of-50 from the floor (.320) to the Sycamores’ 21-of-46 (.457). Ball State managed just one 3-pointer on the night, while Indiana State knocked down 8-of-21 (.381) from deep.

Led by Majok's performance, Ball State held the advantage in points in the paint (28-20) and second-chance points (12-4). Indiana State’s bench outscored Ball State’s bench 27-8, and the Sycamores had 12 points off turnovers to the Cardinals’ six.

"We got a lot of good looks at the basket that we have to be able to knock down," Ball State head coach Billy Taylor said. "We have to go to the basket and finish and then obviously convert free throws. Any time we started to make any kind of progress, we would miss a one-and-one or we would miss two free throws. We have better players than that, and we have to step up and make those shots."

The Sycamores started off the game jumping out to an 8-0 run. Scaife was the first Cardinal to score, draining a trey at the 15:41 mark. The senior guard, who moved into a tie for sixth place on Ball State's career 3-pointers list, was responsible for half of the Cardinals’ first-half points.

Ball State came out strong defensively in the second half but could not convert its opportunities on the offensive end. The Cardinals could not cut the Indiana State lead to fewer than nine points.

Jake Odum led Indiana State on the night with a game-high 21 points and six assists. Manny Arop had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

"We had some good opportunities," Taylor said. "We started the second half with five straight defensive stops and I think we had two points to show for it. That's a pivotal time. We went in down 11 at halftime. We came back out and played good defense in that first four minutes, and we worked too hard defensively to not go on a run there."

The Indiana State win was the first ever by the Sycamores in Worthen Arena and snapped Ball State's 11-game home court winning streak in the series.

Ball State will next face the No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers on Sunday, Nov. 25 in Bloomington, Ind. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at Assembly Hall.
