CLEVELAND, Ohio - - The league’s 12 head coaches have chosen the Ball State women’s volleyball team as the favorite to win the 2014 Mid-American Conference West Division title as announced today by the league office.

“To be predicted to win the MAC West in one of the finest volleyball conferences in the nation is a great show of respect by the league’s coaches,” Ball State head coach Steve Shondell said. “Considering we graduated five players with 19 years of starting experience and are still being predicted to win the division is pretty amazing. The MAC is full of outstanding teams and coaches, and we look forward to a fun and exciting season of Mid-American Conference volleyball.”

In addition redshirt junior middle hitter Hayley Benson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) and redshirt junior outside attacker Alex Fuelling (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont/Morehead State) were named to the 2014 Preseason All-MAC West Division squad. Both were All-MAC First Team selections last season.

“We are very honored to have two of our players named to the Preseason All-MAC West Division team,” Shondell continued. “Hayley Benson and Alex Fuelling were key members of our MAC West championship team from a year ago, and will give our team some much needed experience to build around this year.”

Ball State earned seven of the 12 first-place votes, while Northern Illinois was picked second in the division with four first-place votes. Western Michigan earned the final first-place tally and was picked third in the division, followed by Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and Toledo.

The Cardinals also garnered four votes to win the 2014 MAC regular season title and one vote to win the league’s newly-formatted tournament which will be held Nov. 21-24 in Athens, Ohio. The league’s defending regular season and tournament champion, Ohio, earned the other eight votes to win the regular season crown and nine votes to win the tournament on its home court. Northern Illinois received the other two votes to win the tournament.
