MUNCIE, Ind. - - For her part in guiding the Ball State women’s volleyball team to road wins at Northern Illinois and Western Michigan last weekend, senior setter Jacqui Seidel (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Week.
Seidel, who earns MAC Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career, is the fourth Ball State student-athlete to earn league weekly honors this season. She joins three-time defensive honoree Catie Fredrich (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls), offensive and defensive winner Hayley Benson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) and offensive winner Mindy Marx (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven).
Seidel helped the Cardinals secure a share of the MAC West Division title and the No. 3 seed in MAC Tournament by guiding the offense to a combined .281 (123-43-285) attack percentage in wins at NIU and WMU last week. Over the two matches, Ball State averaged 17.57 kills per set, while Seidel averaged 15.43 assists per set.
In the Cardinals’ sweep at Northern Illinois Friday, Seidel dished out 45 assists and helped three BSU players reach double-figure kills. Ball State connected for a .307 (52-17-114) rate of success against the Huskies, and recorded 19 more kills than their hosts on the night.
In Saturday’s win at Western Michigan, Seidel dished out 63 assists which is the most for a Ball State setter in a four set match in the rally scoring era and one shy of her career high set versus Toledo (Nov. 7). She helped five Cardinals reach double-digit kills in the same match for the first time since the 2009 season. In addition, the Cardinals blasted 25 total kills in the second set alone, while finishing the match with 71 kills which was 21 more than WMU. As a team, Ball State hit .263 (71-26-171) versus the Broncos.
Seidel also turned in a solid effort in the backcourt, averaging 2.43 digs per set last week. In the victory at WMU, Seidel collected 12 digs, to go along with her 63 assists, for her 12th assist/dig double-double of the season. The Ball State women’s volleyball team returns to action Friday, when it battles Western Michigan in the quarterfinal round of the 2013 Mid-American Conference Tournament at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
