MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State women's volleyball head coach Steve Shondell, who has guided the Cardinals to both a Mid-American Conference regular season title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, has signed a new three-year contract through Jan. 31, 2016, according to Ball State director of intercollegiate athletics Bill Scholl.

"We are thrilled Steve will continue to be an integral member of the Ball State family," Scholl says. "Over the past three seasons, Steve has played a vital role in helping restore the championship tradition our volleyball program has enjoyed over its existence. We are looking forward to watching the program continue to flourish behind one of the most respected coaches in the sport."

Over his first three seasons as Ball State's head coach, Shondell has guided the Cardinals to a 63-30 (.677) overall record, including a 33-15 (.688) mark in MAC play. He has also helped return the program to championship form as it won the 2010 MAC regular season title and earned an at-large bid into the 2011 NCAA Tournament.

In his first season with the Cardinals in 2010, Shondell showed why he is considered one of the best coaches in the game by transforming the Ball State squad from a MAC mid-runner to a league championship program. Ball State finished the 2010 season with a 24-5 overall record and won the program's eighth MAC regular season championship with a 14-2 league mark.

The 2010 MAC Coach of the Year, Shondell helped the team carry over the success in his second season, with Ball State posting a 25-8 (12-4 MAC) record in 2011 and earning an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. It was Ball State's first trip to the tournament since 2002 and its second-ever appearance as an at-large selection.

Despite being ravaged by injuries during the 2012 campaign, which saw the Cardinals go 14-17 (7-9 MAC), Ball State managed to place two players on the All-MAC First Team, bringing the total number of first-team honorees during Shondell's tenure to a league-high eight selections.

"Ball State University has played a huge role in my life, and I am honored to continue representing such a great university as its head women's volleyball coach," Shondell says. "Ball State volleyball has a great tradition of excellence and I am proud of the part I have played in it. I am excited to continue building our program into a perennial MAC title contender and a top 25 caliber program. I would like to thank the Muncie community and the entire university for the wonderful support they have given Ball State volleyball."
