MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State women’s volleyball redshirt sophomore middle blocker Hayley Benson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) has been named to the 21-member Academic All-Mid-American Conference Volleyball Team as announced this afternoon by the league office.

A business major with a 3.871 grade-point average entering the fall semester, Benson earns Academic All-MAC honors for the first time in her career. She played in all 32 matches for the Cardinals this past season, making 31 starts. Benson ranked third in the MAC with a .353 attack percentage, while blasting double-digit kills in 11 matches, including a career-high 17 versus Toledo (Nov. 7).

An All-MAC First Team selection, Benson also racked up a Ball State rally scoring era record 14 total blocks versus SMU (Sept. 21), with career highs of five solo blocks and nine block assists. She hit .350-or-better in 15 of Ball State’s 32 matches, helping guide the Cardinals to a 24-8 overall record and a share of the MAC West Division Title.

Over the course of the 2013 season, Benson was also named MAC West Division Offensive Player of the Week (Nov.5), MAC West Division Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 23), to the College of Charleston Holiday Inn Classic All-Tournament Team and to the USF All-Tournament Team.

To earn Academic All-MAC status, a student-athlete must excel in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and participate in at least 50 percent of the contests for their particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

In addition to Benson’s honor, four Cardinals earned honorable mention Academic All-MAC status; senior right side Lauren Grant (Eagan, Minn./Eastview/Cincinnati), senior outside hitter Kylee Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North), sophomore setter/outside hitter Jenna Spadafora (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) and sophomore defensive specialist Kati Vasalakis (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown).
