MUNCIE, Ind. - Behind dominating doubles and singles play the Ball State women's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 win over Northern Illinois in Mid-American Conference action, Friday afternoon in the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
"It was a great team effort," said Ball State head women's tennis coach Max Norris. Every player contributed in their own way and that's important. Every team in the MAC is good and so every match is a great opportunity. We are looking forward to getting back to work next week."
The Cardinals improved to 11-6 overall and 1-0 in MAC action while the Huskies fell to 5-6 in dual action and 0-1 in league play. This is the second straight season Ball State has opened conference competition with a victory.
Courtney Earnest and Bethany Moore continued their solid play in doubles as the twosome topped Nelle Youel and Arantza De La Torre in the first slot, 8-1. Toni Ormond paired up with Kristel Sanders and captured an 8-5 defeat over Maria Rozo and Mary Malkin on court two, taking the doubles point from the Huskies.
Ball State continued its stellar play in singles action, after winning five of the six matches over Northern Illinois. Earnest took down her opponent Cristina Alvarez 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 position. Sanders managed a straight set win on court three over Haley Dekkinga taking the first set by a score of 6-1 then didn't give up a game in the second set winning 6-0. At four singles, Moore beat De La Torre in a two set tie breaker, 7-6 (5), 6-1. Ashlyn Rang took the first set from Malkin before losing the second set 4-6, she would then clinch the match 1-0 (10-5) at the No. 5 slot. Ayaka Terashi rounded out the victories in the last position after beating Stephanie McDonald, 6-2, 6-2.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues Mid-American Conference action at home Saturday, March 29 when it hosts defending MAC Tournament champions Miami at 1 p.m. in the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, weather permitting. Last season the Cardinals defeated the RedHawks, 4-3, in regular season play in Oxford, Ohio.
