Women's Tennis Picks Up 6-1 Win Over Cincinnati

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team netted a 6-1 win over Cincinnati in dual action Saturday afternoon in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.  With the win the Cardinals improve their overall record to 6-1 while the Bearcats fall to 2-6 for the year.  The win over Cincinnati marked the first win over the Bearcats in nearly a decade.

In doubles action, the Cardinals took all three matches from the Bearcats.  Courtney Earnest and Bethany Moore paired up for an 8-6 defeat over Cailtlin O'Gara and Kelly Poggensee-Wei at the No. 1 position.  Toni Ormond and Kristel Sanders followed suit beating Lauren Bellinger and Ashleigh Witte at No. 2 doubles.  Courtney Wild and Ashlyn Rang would take down Katya Bure and Sierra Sullivan 8-5 at the No. 3 spot.

Heading into singles action up 1-0, Ball State continued the winning momentum taking five of the six singles matches from Cincinnati.  Earnest, Ormond and Ayaka Terashi all won in their respective positions in straight sets.  Sanders dropped her first set 3-6 over O'Gara but came back to win 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.  Moore also fell behind early but took sets two and three for the victory at the No. 5 spot.

Ball State women's tennis rounds out weekend play at home Sunday against IPFW at 3 p.m. in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.  After this weekend, the Ball State women's tennis team will continue its five-match homestand with a double-header Saturday, Feb. 22 against Marquette (12 p.m.) and Dayton (5 p.m.).
