MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team returns home Friday for its fourth dual match of 2014 when the Cardinals welcome Oakland for a 4 p.m. first serve at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
The Cardinals are off to a 2-1 start this season after earning a 7-0 sweep over Valparaiso and IUPUI at home Jan. 17. Ball State played its first road match at Kentucky, Saturday Jan. 18, resulting in a 5-2 loss for the Cardinals.
Ball State and Oakland will begin competition with three doubles matches and then end with six singles matches.
This season the Intercollegiate Tennis Association has put trial rules in place to shorten the matches in hopes to bring more attention to the sport and for collegiate tennis. The first change affects the doubles matches. Previously, all doubles matches were eight-game prosets and now they are six-game prosets with a 5-5 tiebreaker. The ITA has also removed the third set from women's tennis singles competition. Instead of playing best of three, the third set will be replaced by a 10-point tie breaker.
After the match Friday, the Ball State women's tennis team will travel to Michigan State Sunday for an 11 a.m. match against the Spartans.
