Women’s Tennis Downs Northern Illinois, 5-2

DEKALB, Ill. -- The Ball State women’s tennis team closed its regular season Friday afternoon with a 5-2 victory in Mid-American Conference action at Northern Illinois.

The Cardinals improved to 14-10 (5-3 MAC), while Northern Illinois dropped to 14-9 (0-7 MAC).

Ball State won two of the three doubles matches to claim the opening point of the day and then picked up four wins in singles action.

The Cardinals won the first three singles contests off the court with straight-set victories from Courtney Earnest at No. 2 (6-3, 6-1), Kristel Sanders at No. 3 (6-2, 6-2) and Ayaka Terashi at No. 4 (6-3, 6-3). Terashi’s win over Arantza De La Torre put the Cardinals on top 4-0 and clinched the team match.

Northern Illinois picked up its first point of the day with Nelle Youel’s 6-1, 6-2 victory over Courtney Wild at No. 1 and then added a 5-7, 6-2, 10-7 win from Cristina Alvarez over Bethany Moore in a match tiebreaker at No. 5.

Ball State’s Ashlyn Rang later tacked on a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 6 to finish off the match and give the Cardinals the final 5-2 margin.

Rang also teamed up with Lauren Pickrel for one of Ball State’s doubles wins with an 8-0 shutout to open the day, while the duo of Moore and Sanders accounted for the other doubles win.

With the regular season now complete, the attention turns to the 2013 Mid-American Conference Tournament. Ball State will host the event April 26-28 at Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
