Ball State's baseball team improved to 7-2 on the season with a 4-1 victory over Rider in Lynchburg, Va., Friday.  The Cardinals will play two games Saturday and a single game Sunday.

"It was a cold game," head coach Rich Maloney says.  "But T.J. Weir and Tyler Jordan warmed it up by pitching such a good game.  We did some of the small things well and only made one error.  We did a lot of the little things well and Alex Call came up big twice.  We made a couple double plays and that helps.  We are not a team of superstars, we grind it out.  We started five freshmen today and it was a good, clean game by both teams."

T.J. Weir earned the victory, while Tyler Jordan earned the save for the Cardinals.  Weir evened his record at 1-1 after pitching seven innings and allowed only one run while striking out four.  Jordan earned his first save of the year after pitching the final two innings and allowed only one hit while striking out two.

The Cardinals took the early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.  With one out, Caleb Stayton walked and Jarrett Rindfleish doubled.  With runners on second and third, Alex Call singled up the middle to score two and put Ball State ahead 2-0.

After allowing Rider one run in the top half of the fourth, the Cardinals responded with one in the fourth and one in the fifth to earn the 4-1 win.

In the fourth, Stayton reached first on a dropped fly ball by the leftfielder and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  With two outs, Call earned his third run-batted-in of the game with a single to center, scoring Stayton.

With a 3-1 lead after four, Ball State added a fourth run in the fifth frame behind a Brandon Estep RBI single to left field that scored Sean Godfrey, who reached first after striking out swinging on a wild pitch that got past the Rider catcher.

Call managed a 2-for-3 performance from the plate with three RBI, while Estep was 2-for-4 with one run-batted-in to lead the Cardinals.

Ball State will face the host Liberty Flames at noon before playing Rider at 6 p.m. Saturday.  The Cardinals will continue play with a Sunday noon contest vs. Liberty.  Rider falls to 2-3 with the Friday loss, while Liberty enters the weekend with a 4-5 mark.
