Scott Baker, a sophomore pitcher for the Ball State baseball team, improved to 8-0 on the season with a 6-1 victory over the Central Michigan Chippewas Saturday at Ball Diamond.

With the win, the Cardinals improved to 15-16 overall and 5-6 in Mid-American Conference play, while CMU fell to 14-19 overall and 4-7 in league play.

Baker pitched a complete game, allowing only one earned run on six hits and striking out 10 batters in the contest.  With the win, he improved to 8-0 on the season after entering the week ranked third in the nation with seven pitching victories.  Baker limited the Chippewas to one extra base hit on the day, which was a homerun by Neal Jacobs in the seventh inning.

The Cardinals scored four runs in the first two innings before adding one in the fourth and one in the seventh to secure the win.

Blake Beemer started the first inning scoring with his first double on the day.  A Sean Godfrey double scored Beemer and Godfrey scored one batter later on a single by Cody Campbell.

In the second inning, Ryan Spaulding led off with his second homerun of the season to put Ball State ahead 3-0.  Wes Winkle doubled to left center, and Beemer tallied his second double of the day to score Winkle and put the Cardinals on top 4-0.

Beemer's bat kept the Ball State scoring going when he singled in Elbert Devarie, who had reached base on an error.

The seventh inning saw Billy Wellman lead off with a single to left and advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by T.J. Weir.  Wellman advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Spaulding's grounder to the third baseman was not executed and he reached first base on a throwing error.

Ball State suffered a loss in the Friday game with CMU, setting up a Sunday 1 p.m. contest to decide the winner of the three-game series.  Admission to all Ball State baseball regular-season games is free of charge.
