Baseball Takes Series at Toledo with 8-4 Win

Ball State's baseball team won for the second time in its three-game series at Toledo with an 8-4 Sunday win to improve to 9-2 in the Mid-American Conference and 24-12 overall.

"Our offense was solid and received contributions from several different players with Ryan Spaulding leading the way," Ball State head coach Rich Maloney says.  "When you pitch well, make the routine play and get the timely hit, you usually are successful and that is what we did this weekend."

The Cardinals managed eight runs on 13 hits, including three home runs, while limiting the Rockets to four runs on 10 hits and dropping their record to 13-20 overall and 5-7 in the MAC.

Zach Plesac improved to 7-2 on the mound with the win after throwing a complete game and allowing only four earned runs, while striking out seven.

Spaulding, Jarett Rindfleisch and Caleb Stayton each homered in the game for Ball State, while T.J. Weir and Sam Tidaback added doubles in the victory for the Cardinals.

After scoring two in their first at-bat, the Cardinals managed four more in the fourth and took a 5-2 lead into the eighth inning.  Ball State managed two insurance runs in the eighth and added one in the ninth to claim the 8-4 win and two victories in the three games at Toledo's Scott Park.

Spaulding, who managed a home run, a double and four runs-batted-in vs. the Rockets on Saturday, was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, one HR and an RBI Sunday.  Spaulding tallied his fourth home run of the season to get the Cardinals' scoring started in the top of the first with a solo shot.

Rindfleisch joined the party when he stepped to the plate in the top of the first with two outs and smacked his third homer of the season over the left centerfield wall.

With its 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth, Rindfleisch started a two-run Ball State rally with a leadoff single.  Sean Kennedy singled and Weir doubled to move Rindfleisch to third.  With two outs, Brandon Estep singled up the middle to score two Cardinals and give Ball State at 4-2 lead.

After Toledo managed two runs in the fourth, Ball State's Sean Godfrey reached base on a fielder's choice in the fifth and with two outs scored after stealing second and scored on a throwing error by the pitcher during a pickoff attempt at second base.

The Cardinals added two insurance runs in the eighth on a Caleb Stayton two run homer to right center, and then scored one in the ninth on a Kennedy sacrifice bunt that scored Spaulding, who had walked.

Rindfleisch and Kennedy were each 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored each.  Weir was 2-for-3 in the game with one run scored, while Stayton was 1-for-1 with two RBI and one run scored.  Estep was 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Ball State will play at Ohio State Wednesday in a 6:35 p.m. game, and then return to the friendly confines of Ball Diamond for a three-game series vs. Western Michigan.  The Cardinals are scheduled for a Friday 3 p.m. start in the first game vs. the Broncos, with Saturday and Sunday's games scheduled for 1 p.m. starts.
