With one swing of the bat, Ball State’s Sean Godfrey gave the baseball team a 6-5 Sunday win and a three-game series sweep over the Eastern Michigan Eagles.

The Cardinals improved to 22-10 overall and 7-1 in the Mid-American Conference and stand one half game behind MAC West Division leader Central Michigan’s 8-1 league record.

After Ball State raced out to a 5-0 lead through six innings, Eastern Michigan scored two in the seventh and three in the eighth to knot the game at 5-5 through eight.  Jacob Brewer took the mound in the top of the ninth and faced four batters but held the Eagles scoreless to set up the ninth inning heroics.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Spaulding singled to put the winning run on first.  Godfrey, who batted .643 in the three games vs. Eastern Michigan, laced a double down the right field line that scored Spaulding and gave the Cardinals the 6-5 victory.  He completed Sunday’s game with a 4-for-5 performance with two runs-batted-in and one run scored.

Brewer was credited with the win and improved to 3-1 on the season, while Zach Plesac earned a no decision after pitching 6.2 innings, allowing only one earned run and striking out two EMU batters.

Ball State opened the day with a two-run first inning after a Godfrey single down the left field line scored Alex Call and put the Cardinals ahead 1-0.  Spaulding scored later in the first on an EMU error and Ball State led 2-0 until the sixth inning.

Sean Kennedy hit a hard grounder that leaked through the left side of the infield in the sixth inning to score Godfrey and Caleb Stayton and put the Cardinals up 4-0.  T.J. Weir followed that up with a line shot to right field to score Jarett Rindfleisch from second and gave Ball State the 5-0 advantage through six innings.

Kennedy completed the day with a 3-for-4 performance and two RBI, while the Cardinals scored their six runs on nine hits.  Eastern Michigan managed 13 hits, but tallied only five runs on the day.

Ball State will play a midweek non-conference game at Butler Wednesday before returning to MAC action with a Friday through Sunday three-game series at Toledo.
