Ball State’s baseball team split a doubleheader with IPFW in two games played at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

The Cardinals suffered an 11-3 loss in the first game and rallied for a 3-1 win in the nightcap.  Ball State is now 11-8 on the season, while the Mastodons are 4-11.  The two teams will meet for two games Saturday at Campbell University.

In Friday’s first game, Ball State scored two in the first, but IPFW tied it back up in the top of the second.  The Cardinals managed one in the bottom half of the second, but the Mastodons rallied for one in the third and broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning.  IPFW managed two more in the seventh and two in the ninth to tally the 11-3 win.

Sean Godfrey’s two-run homer in the first highlighted Ball State’s offense, while the third run of the game came on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Spaulding to score Sam Tidaback, who opened the second inning with a single through the left side of the infield.

Clay Manering suffered the loss after pitching six innings and allowing seven runs, while striking out three.

Godfrey was 1-for-5 with the two runs-batted-in, while Tidaback was 2-for-4 and Spaulding was 1-for-4 with the one RBI.

In game two, Ball State scored one in the first and held the 1-0 lead until the fourth inning when IPFW scored one in the top half of the inning.  The game remained 1-1 until the Cardinals rallied for a two-run eighth inning to seal the 3-1 win.

A Godfrey double to left field with two outs in the first was followed by Jarrett Rindfleish being hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.  Caleb Stayton singled to right and a fielding error by IPFW allowed Godfrey to score and put the Cardinals ahead 1-0.

With the game knotted at 1-1, Spaulding led off the eighth with a single to center field and Godfrey’s single put runners at first and second with no outs.  Jarrett James came in to pinch hit, and laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners.  Stayton walked to load the bases and Spaulding and Godfrey scored when Sean Kennedy reached on an IPFW error.

Nestor Bautista was credited with the win and improved to 2-0 after coming on in relief and pitching the final two innings and allowing IPFW no hits.  T.J. Weir started the game and lasted seven innings, allowing zero earned runs and striking out 10 of the 27 batters he faced.

Godfrey was 2-for-4 on the day, while Stayton was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
