Baseball Improves to 9-3 with 4-3 Win over Liberty

Ball State's baseball team defeated Liberty 4-3 Sunday afternoon to end its four games in Lynchburg, Va., with a 3-1 mark and improve to 9-3 on the season.

The Cardinals led from start to finish after scoring one run in the first, taking a 2-0 lead after two and rallying for two more in the fourth to secure the victory.

Clay Manering improved his record to 1-1 on the season with the victory after pitching 5.2 innings and allowing only two earned runs while striking out five.  Zach Plesac pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn his second save of the year, while also owning a 4-0 pitching record.  Tyler Jordan handled the middle relief duties and allowed only one run and striking out one in his 1.2 innings.

Sean Godfrey led the Cardinals' attack offensively with a 3-for-5 performance, including his second home run and sixth and seventh doubles of the season.

Godfrey doubled down the right field line in the leadoff spot in the top of the first and stole third.  With one out, Brandon Estep hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Godfrey and put the Cardinals ahead 1-0.

In the second inning with one out, T.J. Weir managed an infield single and Alex Call's bunt single moved Weir to second.  Godfrey's second double of the game was a shot down the right field line and scored Weir to give Ball State the 2-0 lead.

The Cardinals entered the top of the fourth with a 2-0 lead and added two more runs to take a 4-0 advantage.

With one out, Call singled to right center, and Godfrey stepped to the plate and continued his dominance with his second HR of the year to give Ball State a 4-0 lead.

The Cardinals allowed two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth but maintained a 4-2 lead, and then Liberty added one run in the seventh to make the game's final margin 4-3.

Weir was 2-for-4 with one run scored on the day, while Call was 3-for-4 with one run scored.

Ball State will take its 9-3 record to Lexington, Ky., Friday through Sunday for a three-game series vs. the Kentucky Wildcats.  First pitch is scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m., with Saturday's game set for 2 p.m. and Sunday's game slated for 1 p.m.
