Ball State's baseball team won its first two games at the Snow Bird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla., to improve to 5-1 on the season.

In the first game vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee, it was a game of quality pitching and big hits that propelled the Cardinals to a 3-1 victory.  Against Mississippi Valley State in the second game, Ball State tallied a 12-1 win.

Scott Baker started the first game and earned the pitching win for Ball State after lasting eight innings, allowing only four hits and one run, while striking out six.  Zach Plesac, who won two games in relief for the Cardinals last week, registered his first save by pitching the ninth inning and striking out two to close out the victory.

Timely key hits included homeruns by Brandon Estep and Caleb Stayton to lead the Cardinals to the win.  Estep was 2-for-4 in the game with one run-batted-in and one run scored.  Stayton was 3-for-4 on the day with two RBI and one run scored.

Ball State scored the first run of the game in the top of the second before UWM tied the game at 1-1 in the third.  Single run innings by the Cardinals in the fifth and the sixth sealed the win for the Cardinals.

In the second game of the day vs. Mississippi Valley State, Ball State used a seven-run second inning to propel the Cardinals to a 12-1 victory and improve to 5-1 on the year.

Jacob Brewer got the start on the mound and dominated the game, striking out 11 batters in six innings and allowing only two hits.  Brewer, who missed last season with an injury, earned his first career victory at Ball State.

A grand slam by Sean Godfrey in the second inning was the big hit of the day for the Cardinals and propelled the team to the win.

Nick Hollowell tallied a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, while Jarrett Rindfleish was 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored.  Elbert Devarie was 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored.

The Cardinals will face Iowa in a 5:30 p.m. game Saturday and then complete their appearance at the Snow Bird Classic with a Sunday 10:30 a.m. game vs. Northwestern.
