Baker pitched seven innings, allowing one earned run, while striking out eight and walking only two . . . Baker has a 1.29 earned run average on the season and opponents have batted only .231 against him this season.
TOP HITTER RETURNS: Sean Godfrey, a junior outfield, led Ball State with a .328 batting average as he posted 43 hits in 131 at-bats in 2012 ... He was second on the team with 24 runs scored while driving in 18 runs ... Godfrey led the team with 13 stolen bases in 15 attempts ... He posted a team-high 10 doubles while also hitting a home run and a triple ... Godfrey was second on the team with a .443 slugging percentage ... He tallied eight multiple-hit games and three multiple-RBI games last season ... Godfrey opened the 2013 season with four hits in 13 at-bats for a .308 average with one double.
T.J. WEIR LEADS TEAM IN TOTAL BASES: T.J. Weir managed a .300 batting average in Ball State's first series of the season . . . He leads the team with seven total bases after tallying three hits, including one double and one homerun.
BILLY WELLMAN SET FOR JUNIOR SEASON: Billy Wellman, a junior infielder, posted 33 hits in 102 at-bats for the Cardinals in 2012 ... He was second on the team with 26 RBI while scoring 10 runs as a sophomore ... Wellman tied for the team lead with four home runs while posting seven doubles to lead the team with a .510 slugging percentage in 2012 ... Wellman tallied nine multiple-hit games and a team-high seven multiple-RBI games.
WINKLE RECEIVES SOME PRESEASON CONSIDERATION: Wes Winkle, a senior outfielder, was named to the College Sports Madness Preseason All-Mid-American Conference Second Team . . . Winkle played in 46 games last season as a junior outfielder and finished third on the team with a .307 batting average ... He led the Cardinals with 58 hits in 189 at-bats, primarily from the leadoff position in the lineup ... Winkle led Ball State with 30 runs scored, while driving in 13 runs in 2012 ... He posted seven doubles and two triples and was second on the team with 12 stolen bases ... Winkle, who led the team with 19 multi-hit games in 2012, ended the season with a 10-game hitting streak intact.
MARANGON EARNS OPENING DAY START: Chris Marangon, a senior right handed pitcher, appeared in a team-high 20 games, including nine starts, to earn his first letter in 2012 ... He started in the Cardinals season opener at Middle Tennessee State and had no decision after pitching 6.1 innings, allowing only four hits and no earned runs ... He started the 2012 season in the bullpen and moved into the weekend rotation during Mid-American Conference play ... Marangon posted a 3-7 record with a 3.75 ERA in 69.2 innings of work, while posting a team-high two saves ... He struck out 40 batters and walked 25 ... Marangon held opponents to a team-low .222 batting average, which ranked third-lowest in the MAC ... He worked a career-high 8.2 innings against Eastern Michigan (April 21) as he allowed three runs on two hits ... He posted his first career complete game at Toledo (April 29) as he tossed 8.0 innings and allowed two runs on six hits ... BEEMER READY FOR SENIOR SEASON: Blake Beemer, a senior outfielder/first baseman, appeared in 48 games, including 46 starts in 2012 ... He finished fourth on the team with a .282 batting average, driving in 14 runs while scoring 13 ... He notched nine doubles and a triple ... Beemer recorded 11 multiple-hit games, including two three-hit games against Tennessee (March 7) and Miami (April 6) ... He hit a career-high three doubles against Miami University ... Beemer drove in a season-high two runs against Miami (April 8) ... He posted a six-game hitting streak April 29-May 11 ... Beemer ended the season reaching base in a career-high 11 straight games from April 29-May 19 ... He started all 27 Mid-American Conference games and finished third on the team with a .301 batting average against league opponents last season.
