Baseball Drops Series Opener At Toledo, 5-0
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Ball State baseball team was limited to just three hits Friday afternoon by Toledo left-hander Ryan Wilkinson as the Cardinals dropped the series opener to the Rockets 5-0 at Scott Park in Mid-American Conference play.
Wilkinson led the MAC West Division-leading Rockets to victory as he posted a complete-game shutout of the Cardinals, only facing 29 batters on the afternoon. He struck out nine batters improving Toledo to 10-6 in league play.
Sophomore right-hander T.J. Weir (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) was the hard-luck loser for the Cardinals as he allowed four runs, only two of which were earned, in 7.0 innings of work. Weir limited the Rockets to just four hits on the afternoon while striking out seven to fall to 2-7 on the season while the Cardinals dropped to 6-10 in MAC play.
Toledo (21-21) opened the scoring quickly tallying three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Rockets took advantage of a balk call on Weir to score the first run of the game and scored another run on a BSU throwing error in a rundown attempt between third base and home. The Rockets made it a 4-0 contest with another unearned run as Ball State opened the inning with a fielding error and that runner eventually scored as Dan Zuchowski lifted a sacrifice fly.
Ball State (11-27) was held to just three hits in the loss as Weir singled in the first inning, Billy Wellman (Portland, Ind./Jay County) doubled in the seventh inning and Dominick Catanzarite (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) singled in the eighth inning. The Cardinals only got a runner into scoring twice in the game as Wellman reached second on his double and Elbert Devarie (Kissimmee, Fla./Gateway) reached second base in the third inning after a walk.
Ball State and Toledo will continue its three-game series Saturday afternoon with first pitch set for 1 p.m. Junior right-hander Chris Marangon (Maple Valley, Wash./Edmunds CC) is set to start for the Cardinals.
