Ball State baseball alum T.J. Weir made his professional debut and tallied his first career victory for the Arizona League Padres, a team in the Rookie Arizona League.

Weir came in to pitch in the top of the fifth with the Arizona League White Sox holding a 2-0 lead.  Weir pitched two innings, striking out two and allowing only one hit, while his Padres’ team scored five runs in the fifth and three more in the eighth to win the game 8-2.

The Arizona League is a rookie-level professional baseball league run by Minor League Baseball. Games are played from mid-June until the end of August, and a season consists of 56 games. The players in this league are usually from other countries or drafted high school and college players from the Major League Baseball June Draft.

Weir was selected in the 17th round of the MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres after ranking ninth in the nation with 117 strikeouts and 15th nationally with 16 pitching starts for Ball State in 2014.  A 2014 American Baseball Coaches Association All-Mideast Region Second-Team selection, Weir finished second in the Mid-American Conference in strikeouts and tied for third with eight pitching victories.  He tallied an 8-2 record with a 3.61 earned-run average for the Cardinals as a senior.

Weir helped the Cardinals to a 39-18 overall record, a 22-4 MAC mark, the MAC Regular-Season Championship and a MAC West Division title last season.
