Baseball Moves into First in MAC West with Victory

Ball State’s baseball team scored first and often in tallying a 9-0 victory at Central Michigan Friday to move into first place in the Mid-American Conference West Division.

With the victory, the Cardinals improved to 12-3 overall in MAC play, while Central Michigan fell to 12-4 in league play. 

The Cardinals broke the game open with six runs in the seventh inning to take a 9-0 lead while T.J. Weir pitched six innings and limited the Chippewas to five hits, no runs and struck out nine.  Weir earned the victory and improved to 6-1 on the season. 

Clay Manering came on in relief and pitched the final three innings, allowing no hits, no runs and striking out three.

Sean Godfrey’s third-inning home run, his eighth of the year, put the Cardinals up 2-0 and a Brandon Estep double in the fourth scored Kyle Raleigh to put Ball State up 3-0.

The pivotal seventh inning started with an Alex Call single through the left side of the infield and he advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Spaulding.  Godfrey’s double scored Call and a Raleigh two-out single scored Godfrey.  Estep singled through the left side to score Raleigh, and Alex Maloney completed the innings’ scoring with a double to left center to score two more Cardinals.

Godfrey completed the day with a 2-for-5 performance from the plate, two runs scored and two runs-batted-in.  Estep was 2-for-4 from the plate with three RBI and one run scored.  Raleigh was 2-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored, while Call was 2-for-4 on the day with two runs scored.

Ball State improved to 28-14 overall, while CMU fell to 25-16.  The two teams will meet Saturday with first pitched scheduled for 1 p.m., and the series finale will be Sunday at 1 p.m.
