Baseball Wins 7-6 over Western Michigan in 10 Innings

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning, Ball State’s Alex Maloney was hit by a pitch to score Sean Godfrey and give the Cardinals a 7-6 win over Western Michigan Sunday.

Ball State improved to 27-13 overall and 11-3 in the Mid-American Conference and took the three-game series by a 2-1 margin over the Broncos.  Western Michigan fell to 14-21 overall and 5-10 in MAC play.

Credited with the game-winning run-batted-in on the hit by pitch, Maloney capped off a day that featured a 2-for-2 performance from the plate with four RBI and his second home run of the season.

After Western Michigan took a 3-0 lead in the third, Ball State responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, which included Maloney’s three run homer over the left field fence to tie the game at 3-3.

The game remain tied until the eighth inning when Western Michigan scored three in the top half of the frame, but Ball State responded with three of its own in the bottom of the inning to knot the game at 6-6.

A bases loaded walk scored the first run of the inning for the Cardinals, and a Godfrey single to right scored Ball State’s other two runs to tie the game.

Both teams were held scoreless in the ninth to set up the 10th inning action, and improve Ball State’s record to 4-1 in extra inning contests.

With one out, Godfrey singled to center and advanced to second when T.J. Weir was walked.  Sean Kennedy was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Maloney was plunked by Western Michigan’s Pat Haynes to give the Cardinals the victory.

Chris Lovejoy was the pitcher of record for the Cardinals and evened his season mark to 1-1.  Zach Plesac started the game for Ball State and pitched 7.1 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out two.

Godfrey was 2-for-6 on the day with two RBI, while Kyle Raleigh was 1-for-2.

Ball State, which has now won nine straight series over MAC opponents, will play at Indiana Wednesday in a non-conference game before travelling to league-leading Central Michigan for a three-game series starting Friday.
