Ball State's baseball team suffered a 12-4 loss at Toledo Friday in the first game of the three-game series with the Rockets.
With the loss, the Cardinals fell to 22-12 overall and 7-2 in the Mid-American Conference, while Toledo improved to 13-18 in all games and 5-5 in the MAC.
Toledo rallied early for seven runs in the first three innings and added five more scores in the fifth through seventh innings to seal the victory.
Scott Baker started on the mound for Ball State and lasted 2.1 innings, allowing six earned runs on nine hits. Chris Lovejoy, B.J. Butler and Matt Johnsen finished the game as Baker fell to 5-3 on the season with the loss.
After falling behind 7-0 through three innings, Sean Godfrey led off the fourth inning with a single to left center and Jarett Rindfleisch singled to put runners on first and second. With one out, T.J. Weir came through with a pinch-hit triple to score two Cardinals and pull Ball State within 7-2.
Toledo failed to score in the fifth, and Cole Greisinger led the Cardinals' half of the inning off with a single. With two outs, Godfrey homered to right center and the gap was down to 7-4 for the Rockets.
Ball State's offense was stymied the remainder of the game and Toledo managed one run in the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the seventh to claim the win.
Godfrey was 2-for-5 with two runs-batted-in and two runs scored in the contest. Rindfleisch was 2-for-5 from the plate with one run scored, while Kennedy managed a 2-for-5 performance as well. Weir was 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Alex Maloney was 2-for-4 on the day.
Ball State and Toledo are scheduled for a 1 p.m. game Saturday in Toledo, Ohio, and a 1 p.m. contest Sunday at Scott Park.
